SUMMARY:Scientific Excursion around Sustainable World
DESCRIPTION:The central theme of the summer school is sustainable development. Sustainability has three main pillars: economic\, environmental\, and social.  The sustainable development goals are universal call to action to end poverty\, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone\, everywhere. For this reason\, sustainable development is part of the education of most countries around the world. The GEM summer school focuses on presenting the role of science and research in fulfilling the economic\, environmental\, and social goals of sustainable development. The summer school includes outdoor STEM activities\, the use of information and communication technology for simulations and modelling of processes in the landscape and group work\, students’ projects\, based on the principles of inquiry based learning. The environmental goals of sustainable development are in the focus of the summer school. Participants\, teenager girls\, will gain knowledge that will help them realize the role of the individual and his conscious steps in the sustainability of life in their surroundings\, region and on the planet. The topics that the girls will address in their projects will teach them to understand the context of human activities with respect to the environment\, the protection of plant and animal species and to consider and process information in a scientific context. The acquired knowledge and skills will enable girls to prepare activities aimed at sustainable development for their children’s and adult clients in tourism. \nContact Person: Sona Ceretkova sceretkova@ukf.sk \nShare this post

SUMMARY:Smart City
DESCRIPTION:“The Smart City 2022” Summer School continues the idea of previous Summer Schools – see STEM from a different\, unprecedented perspective\, be curious\, creative and entrepreneurial in designing your life and your vision of a smart city. \nThe main questions we will seek to answer through the school’s activities are: how do smart technologies create a convenient life? Why STEM + business = innovation? \nThe Summer School activities should spark curiosity and a desire to create smart environments for ourselves and for people. The girls will learn by asking questions\, finding creative solutions and working together with the school’s faculty and university researchers. The main goal of the school activities is to develop the girls in STEM fields\, to experience a sense of success in the “here and now” by designing and creating a mini project with Arduino\, to motivate them to go deeper into STEM and entrepreneurship\, to spark their curiosity to question\, to go deeper\, to explore\, and to create in the pursuit of new values. \nContact Person: Asta Meškauskienė at asta.meskauskiene@fsf.vu.lt \nShare this post

SUMMARY:Teknikkollo
DESCRIPTION:The purpose of Teknikkollo is to inspire young people to technology\, give technical self-confidence and\, in the longer term\, contribute to a well-thought-out high school choice. Sweden needs a lot of manpower with technical skills going forward and we must all contribute to this! In addition\, Sweden needs to level the gender-segregated labour market. \nIn Teknikkollo we will teach in programming\, 3D modelling\, 3D printing and use laser cutters as well as several maker moments with electronics as well as programming robots. Our idea is that we teach basics\, show possible prototypes they can try to make but that their interest and curiosity will make them later develop their own products based on their own ideas. The whole process is the instructors there and lead them to progress. We will program with Microbits and build products controlled by Microbits. The participants are encouraged to create complex products where they use knowledge from several different new technologies they learned during the week. We have a lot of materials\, tools\, and knowledge so there are great opportunities to pursue their production ideas. The instructors also serve as good role models for choosing technology and science education. They talk about their experiences\, feelings and thoughts about the technology and contexts they have come in contact. In the end of the week they are going to create a simple video to show what they accomplished during the week. \nTeknikkollo is free for the participants and they are all allowed to bring a lot of thing home in the end of the camp\, etc Microbit. This camp will hopefully be a unique experience of science and technology with other young people. Our idea is that it should not end with the camp but that a genuine interest in technology develops. \nContact Person  Linda Samuelsson Linda.samuelsson@jonkoping.se \n  \nShare this post

SUMMARY:ICSE's Quarterly Problem - Learning Opportunities for Social Participation
DESCRIPTION:Current societal problems such as climate change or the Covid pandemic are increasingly putting topics related to mathematics and science at the center of public discussions. To participate in these discussions\, people need the skills and knowledge to engage with\, discuss\, and make reasoned decisions about mathematical and scientific ideas and information. Therefore\, these skills and knowledge should be acquired as early as at school. With our Quarterly Problems\, teachers can provide learning opportunities that support the development of responsible citizens. \nAlice Hesse shares in a short video\, uploaded to our website on April 29th\, what our Quarterly Problems are about and how they encourage students to consider social\, economic\, political\, and ethical aspects of the learning context. \n  \nShare this post

SUMMARY:STEMkey's 4th Transnational Project Meeting
DESCRIPTION:During this meeting\, the main focus is on finding solutions to assess STEM key competences in classroom settings. Assessment methods are of high importance\, as only when teachers are enabled to assess learners’ performances upon completion of any given task/subject lesson/programme can they realistically implement these activities in their classrooms. Key competences pose a particular challenge here\, as key competences are a combination fo knowledge\, skills and attitudes. Whereas knowledge bits have been assessed for ages\, this does not apply to skills and least of all attitudes in STEM education so far. \nShare this post

SUMMARY:PBE 2021 - Project-based education and other activating strategies in science education
DESCRIPTION:Pre-service training is crucial to promote innovative educational approaches. Research has shown that\, activating strategies – such as project-based and inquiry-based teaching and learning – need to be trained in pre-service teacher training\, as teachers who have not experienced and practiced it\, will unlikely apply such strategies in their future practice. \nAt the same time\, it seems that applying these strategies requires gradual steps. Students need to develop a growing autonomy of their own learning step by step. From the teachers’ competences point of view it is important to choose appropriate amount of scaffolding and its successive decreasing. \nPBE conference has actively supported future and practicing STEM teachers for a decade\, come and join our journey! \nPBE 2021 is organised by and at the Department of Chemistry and Chemistry Education\, Faculty of Education\, Charles University\, Czech Republic\, with support of other STEM teacher training experts. \nThe STEMkey project will contribute to the conference with its latest insight into competence-based and interdisciplinary STEM education. \n  \nShare this post

SUMMARY:Environmental socio-scientific issues in (teacher) education for science & mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nShould vaccination be compulsory? Is it possible to use only ‘renewable energy’? Can global warming be stopped?\nThe relevance of paying attention to this type of socially relevant scientific dilemma’s (socio-scientific issues) in teacher training for science and mathematics is increasing. After all\, education has the task of preparing pupils for a future in which they are able to think along and decide on these kinds of issues.\nSSI are little structured\, open problems or dilemmas that have multiple solutions. Underlying data plays an important role in making decisions on such issues. Using mathematics\, in particular statistics on large databases\, therefor can play an important part in this.\nIn this multiplier event of the Ensite project we will talk about how science and mathematics teacher educators can incorporate SSI. We focus on environmental SSI and use experiences and ideas from Ensite and other European projects on this subject (Parrise\, MasDiv).\nWe invite teacher educators of STEM-subjects and other interested parties to register. \nSchedule\n\n\n\n13:45-14:00\nIntroduction\n\n\n14:00-14:45\nInvited plenary – Christine Knippels (Utrecht University\, Freudenthal Institute) – SSI and IBL \nTo make responsible decisions regarding SSIs\, such as increased carbon dioxide emissions\, deployment of resources\, citizens need to consider both scientific knowledge and personal and social values and beliefs. Fostering these aspects of democratic citizenship is an important aim of science education (European Commission\, 2015). SSIBL aims to foster responsible research and innovation through science education\, by connecting SSIs with inquiry-based learning and citizenship education (Levinson et al.\, 2017). \nChristine will show how SSIBL was developed (for example in the Parrise project)\, will talk about the challenges of giving the right attention to SSIBL in teacher training\, and show some results of recent research: How do pre-service teachers value SSIBL-pedagogy?\n\n\n14:45-15:00\nBreak\n\n\n15:00-16:30\nTopic discussions\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to teach science and maths\, with the use of socioscientific issues. \nRegistration\nPlease register at here. \nShare this post
