On the other hand\, you will help shaping the network with your contributions and become active yourself: share your experiences\, best practices and knowledge\, information on equal opportunities for girls in STEM/ICT\, implement a variety of awareness-raising activities in society. \nOn November 11 we would like to inform you about the GEM project and the role of the GEM Network\, as well as offer you to take a closer look on best practices in creating good learning environments at the example of Slovakia. You will have a chance to discuss interesting questions arising from the speaker’s presentations. Together with stakeholders from around Europe you will have a chance to think about other actions and activities that can inspire and support girls on their journey towards STEM and ICT professions. \nPlease find a detailed agenda and information on meeting speakers: \nSharing best practices and personal stories\n2 – 2:30 p.m. Mrs. Dita Kreuz (project GEM manager) and Mrs. Sona Ceretkova: Welcome and GEM project introduction\, National GEM Team background: example Slovakia \n2:30 – 3 p.m. Mrs. Ľubica Rozborova\, RISOTO (Respectful Inclusion\, Social Opportunity\, Tolerance; NGO)\, Bratislava \nMrs. Rozborova is CEO of RISOTO\, which conducts audits\, consults\, designs processes\, and trains employees and management to help the company get on the path to building a truly inclusive organization. SUMMARY:PBE 2021 - Project-based education and other activating strategies in science education
DESCRIPTION:Pre-service training is crucial to promote innovative educational approaches. Research has shown that\, activating strategies – such as project-based and inquiry-based teaching and learning – need to be trained in pre-service teacher training\, as teachers who have not experienced and practiced it\, will unlikely apply such strategies in their future practice. \nAt the same time\, it seems that applying these strategies requires gradual steps. Students need to develop a growing autonomy of their own learning step by step. From the teachers’ competences point of view it is important to choose appropriate amount of scaffolding and its successive decreasing. \nPBE conference has actively supported future and practicing STEM teachers for a decade\, come and join our journey! \nPBE 2021 is organised by and at the Department of Chemistry and Chemistry Education\, Faculty of Education\, Charles University\, Czech Republic\, with support of other STEM teacher training experts. \nThe STEMkey project will contribute to the conference with its latest insight into competence-based and interdisciplinary STEM education. \n  \nShare this post

SUMMARY:Environmental socio-scientific issues in (teacher) education for science & mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nShould vaccination be compulsory? Is it possible to use only ‘renewable energy’? Can global warming be stopped?\nThe relevance of paying attention to this type of socially relevant scientific dilemma’s (socio-scientific issues) in teacher training for science and mathematics is increasing. After all\, education has the task of preparing pupils for a future in which they are able to think along and decide on these kinds of issues.\nSSI are little structured\, open problems or dilemmas that have multiple solutions. Underlying data plays an important role in making decisions on such issues. Using mathematics\, in particular statistics on large databases\, therefor can play an important part in this.\nIn this multiplier event of the Ensite project we will talk about how science and mathematics teacher educators can incorporate SSI. We focus on environmental SSI and use experiences and ideas from Ensite and other European projects on this subject (Parrise\, MasDiv).\nWe invite teacher educators of STEM-subjects and other interested parties to register. \nSchedule\n\n\n\n13:45-14:00\nIntroduction\n\n\n14:00-14:45\nInvited plenary – Christine Knippels (Utrecht University\, Freudenthal Institute) – SSI and IBL \nTo make responsible decisions regarding SSIs\, such as increased carbon dioxide emissions\, deployment of resources\, citizens need to consider both scientific knowledge and personal and social values and beliefs. Fostering these aspects of democratic citizenship is an important aim of science education (European Commission\, 2015). SSIBL aims to foster responsible research and innovation through science education\, by connecting SSIs with inquiry-based learning and citizenship education (Levinson et al.\, 2017). \nChristine will show how SSIBL was developed (for example in the Parrise project)\, will talk about the challenges of giving the right attention to SSIBL in teacher training\, and show some results of recent research: How do pre-service teachers value SSIBL-pedagogy?\n\n\n14:45-15:00\nBreak\n\n\n15:00-16:30\nTopic discussions\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to teach science and maths\, with the use of socioscientific issues. \nRegistration\nPlease register at here. \nShare this post

SUMMARY:ENSITE Multiplier Event in Utrecht
DESCRIPTION:Should wind power plants be set-up everywhere? Should we forbid the use of drinking water for cleaning and gardening? This type of socio-scientific issues is receiving increasing attention in teacher education for STEM subjects. The use of mathematics plays an important role when exploring these issues. In particular the use of statistics to analyse  the ‘big’ data involved\, can help taking decisions. \nDuring this mulitplier event (ME) of the project Ensite Environmental Socio-Scientific Issues in Initial teacher education) we will present and discuss examples of how students in Initial teacher education can learn about statistics and SSI and how they in turn can teach this in secondary school. \n  \nTarget group: Teacher educators of STEM \nLocation: Utrecht\, the Netherlands \nDates: \nThursday May 14\, 13:00-17:00 International meeting (ME): Environmental SSI in mathematics and science teacher education \nFriday may 15\, 10:00-16:00 national (dutch) conference for teacher educators of STEM\, with an international track (in English) on Environmental Socio-Scientific Issues in Initial teacher education \n  \nMore information: https://elbd.sites.uu.nl/2020/02/17/maatschappelijk-technologische-vraagstukken-in-het-beta-onderwijs-14-mei-2020/ \nIf you want to participate please send an email to: m.wijers@uu.nl \nShare this post

SUMMARY:MaSDiV Policy Seminar (by invitation only)
DESCRIPTION:Initiating and Sustaining Cooperation for Innovation in STEM Education \nCollaboration between different stakeholders in education is vital for the implementation and mainstreaming of innovative STEM education at school. In order to reach large numbers of teachers\, all stakeholders in the field of Professional Development need to cooperate. In the European project MaSDiV\, for instance\, Ministry-University tandems from each partner country ensure cooperation between the policy and research level\, to achieve the highest possible impact. However\, cooperation is not always moving straight forward\, as different stakeholders have different aims\, agendas and schedules. In order to enhance cooperation between different stakeholders\, a particular policy seminar was set up as an international forum to reflect and exchange experiences in cooperation on both\, the national as well as the European level. \nThe Policy Seminar is part of the final MaSDiV conference\, Educating the Educators III\, hosted by ICSE\, ICSE Consortium and MaSDiV. During the seminar\, Mónika Kepe-Holmberg\, EU – DG Education\, Youth\, Sport and Culture\, will illuminate the importance of cooperation on the European level. Experts from policy\, research and industry will present recent models and examples of best practices for cooperation in Europe. Policy makers\, researchers and stakeholders in the field of Professional Development from all over Europe are invited to discuss and reflect various questions concerning the approach and implementation of successful cooperation: Strategies and communication\, benefits\, risks and challenges. \nShare this post
