SUMMARY:Educating the Educators: STEM & Open Schooling for Sustainability Education
DESCRIPTION:Educating the Educators (ETE) is an international conference series on professional development in STEM (science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics) education that brings together teacher educators\, policy makers\, teachers and various other stakeholders related to STEM education. \nETE IV will focus on implementing and scaling up innovative teaching approaches in STEM education and in particular on open schooling initiatives with respect to environmental issues (such as waste reduction\, energy reduction/transition\, increasing electricity needs for clouds and bitcoins\, etc.). The aim is to discuss different approaches with a rich variety of participants on ways of working for teachers and PD course leaders\, the roles of teaching materials\, and on structures needed for innovations in STEM education. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nETE IV features both traditional and innovative formats to benefit of gathering a circle of participants from research\, practice and policy. Vivid exchange and collaborative work will be ensured by spaces for co-creation and for sharing ideas and results. Three prominent keynote speakers will provide rich introductions on the main theme of the conference: \n\nArjen Wals (Professor Transformative Learning for Socio-ecological Sustainability/Unesco Chair at Wageningen University & Research\, Netherlands)\nMarta Romero Ariza (MOST-project & University of Jaén\, Spain)\nKatja Maaß (MOST-project & University of Education Freiburg\, Germany) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n  \nRegistration is now open!

SUMMARY:GEM Girls Club in Utrecht\, Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:GEM Girlsclub WIN \n(‘Wiskunde\, Informatica\, Natuurkunde’ -> Mathematics\, Computer Science\, Physics) \n  \nUtrecht University has shifted from a regular summer school programme for Dutch girls to a yearlong programme of Girlsclub-days\, due to the Corona Pandemic. The programme is set for 24 girls on each day between 14 and 15 years old and participants will get to know young female scientists who are already established in the field and young women just entering the fields of computer science\, mathematics\, and physics. Activities include programming\, designing\, doing experiments as well as behind the scenes faculty access. \n  \nDates: \n31 May 2021\n21 June 2021\n14 October 2021\n9 December 2021 \n  \n  \nContact Person: Marjolein Gelauff and Vincent Jonker

SUMMARY:Environmental socio-scientific issues in (teacher) education for science & mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nShould vaccination be compulsory? Is it possible to use only ‘renewable energy’? Can global warming be stopped?\nThe relevance of paying attention to this type of socially relevant scientific dilemma’s (socio-scientific issues) in teacher training for science and mathematics is increasing. After all\, education has the task of preparing pupils for a future in which they are able to think along and decide on these kinds of issues.\nSSI are little structured\, open problems or dilemmas that have multiple solutions. Underlying data plays an important role in making decisions on such issues. Using mathematics\, in particular statistics on large databases\, therefor can play an important part in this.\nIn this multiplier event of the Ensite project we will talk about how science and mathematics teacher educators can incorporate SSI. We focus on environmental SSI and use experiences and ideas from Ensite and other European projects on this subject (Parrise\, MasDiv).\nWe invite teacher educators of STEM-subjects and other interested parties to register. \nSchedule\n\n\n\n13:45-14:00\nIntroduction\n\n\n14:00-14:45\nInvited plenary – Christine Knippels (Utrecht University\, Freudenthal Institute) – SSI and IBL \nTo make responsible decisions regarding SSIs\, such as increased carbon dioxide emissions\, deployment of resources\, citizens need to consider both scientific knowledge and personal and social values and beliefs. Fostering these aspects of democratic citizenship is an important aim of science education (European Commission\, 2015). SSIBL aims to foster responsible research and innovation through science education\, by connecting SSIs with inquiry-based learning and citizenship education (Levinson et al.\, 2017). \nChristine will show how SSIBL was developed (for example in the Parrise project)\, will talk about the challenges of giving the right attention to SSIBL in teacher training\, and show some results of recent research: How do pre-service teachers value SSIBL-pedagogy?\n\n\n14:45-15:00\nBreak\n\n\n15:00-16:30\nTopic discussions\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to teach science and maths\, with the use of socioscientific issues. \nRegistration\nPlease register at here.
