SUMMARY:1h4teachers in STEM: Inspiring STEM Pathways through Interactive Career Talks
DESCRIPTION:How to Bring Authentic Role Models and Meaningful Career Conversations into Your Classroom\nHow can schools inspire young people to imagine themselves in STEM pathways? How can career guidance move beyond static presentations and become a meaningful learning experience that challenges stereotypes\, builds confidence\, and broadens horizons? \nThis practice-oriented online session introduces the concept of Interactive Career Talks (ICaT)\, developed and implemented in the Horizon Europe project ICSE Science Factory. The format rethinks traditional career talks: instead of one-way presentations\, students engage in authentic dialogue with role models from science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics. Speakers share personal journeys\, real challenges\, motivations\, setbacks\, and the societal relevance of their work. Students are invited to ask questions\, reflect\, and connect careers with their own interests and aspirations. \nThe session is designed for teachers who would like to organise motivating and realistic career conversations in their own schools\, whether in STEM subjects\, careers education\, or interdisciplinary projects. \nAbout the Session \nParticipants will gain practical insight into: \n\nWhat makes an Interactive Career Talk different from a traditional guest lecture\nHow authentic role models can strengthen students’ motivation\, science identity\, and career awareness\nHow to select and prepare speakers from research\, industry\, or the wider community\nHow to create an open atmosphere that encourages student questions and dialogue\nHow to address stereotypes and make STEM careers visible to diverse learners\nHow to organise manageable formats with limited time and resources\nLessons learned from implementations across five European countries\n\nWhy Attend? \nBy the end of the session\, participants will have: \n\nA clear framework for organising Interactive Career Talks in their own context\nPractical strategies for identifying suitable speakers and preparing students\nIdeas for low-threshold formats that fit everyday school life\nInspiration for widening participation in STEM pathways\, especially among underrepresented groups\nConcrete examples that can be adapted immediately\n\nFormat \n\nOnline via Zoom\nDuration: 1 hour (1h4teachers format)\n20–30 minute input session\nInteractive “Ask the Expert” discussion\nFree of charge\nCertificate of attendance for all participants\n\nWho Should Join? \nThis session is open to: \n\nSTEM teachers\nCareers guidance staff\nSchool leaders\nTeacher educators\nAll educators interested in widening participation and future-oriented learning\n\nJoin Us \nDiscover how a simple conversation with the right role model can open new perspectives\, challenge assumptions\, and help students see that STEM careers may also be for them. \n  \nRegistration: Sign up now! \n  \n

SUMMARY:Diversity Sensitive Support for Vocational Orientation of Young Women
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \nWomen are still underrepresented in science and technology studies. Although choosing a career is considered to be a highly individual decision based on one’s own skills and competencies\, it is actually very influenced by cultural context: female and working-class students seem to think more often than others that science is not for them. \nIn this online workshop\, Prof. Dr. Silvija Markic will present in what ways vocational orientation measures could be designed to appeal to groups that are currently underrepresented in science. \nTogether we will learn about different strategies which are offered but also wished by the young women when it comes to their career aspiration. The workshop will be based on an online tool which helps young women to reflect on their own self-concept and abilities for career in natural sciences. \nThe workshop is for free and will be held online via Zoom. You will get the Zoomlink after your registration here: https://eveeno.com/130778430 \n  \n*** \nProf. Dr. Silvija Markic is a professor for chemistry education at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich\, Germany after a professorship at the Pädagogische Hochschule Ludwigsburg. \nHer research interests include science teachers’ beliefs and pedagogical content knowledge\, linguistic heterogeneity and cultural diversity in chemistry and science education\, cooperative learning and alternative teaching methods as well as digitalization of teaching and learning at the tertiary level. \n

SUMMARY:Empowering Girls
DESCRIPTION:The summer school will be addressed only to girls 13-15 years old\, that is girls who attended classes od secondary education during 2021-2022 school year. It will be held online for three days from 9.00 to 15.00 approximately every day. The girls will be divided in three groups according to their class. A mentor will be responsible for each group as regards the educational part of the camp (e.g.\, activities\, structure of sessions\, materials\, etc.) while another colleague will be responsible for the communication with parents/guardians for all organizational issues. The girls will be involved in STEM labs based on activities addressing at least two STEM fields. The activities will be adapted to diverse levels and profiles including connections to women’s contribution to STEM fields and favouring the girls’ reflections on their own educational and professional path. With these activities\, we aim to (a) introduce the girls to featured STEM fields and corresponding professional spaces\, (b) inform girls about women’s contribution to scientific domains\, and (c) improve girls self-confidence in their abilities related to STEM.

SUMMARY:Environmental socio-scientific issues in (teacher) education for science & mathematics
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\nShould vaccination be compulsory? Is it possible to use only ‘renewable energy’? Can global warming be stopped?\nThe relevance of paying attention to this type of socially relevant scientific dilemma’s (socio-scientific issues) in teacher training for science and mathematics is increasing. After all\, education has the task of preparing pupils for a future in which they are able to think along and decide on these kinds of issues.\nSSI are little structured\, open problems or dilemmas that have multiple solutions. Underlying data plays an important role in making decisions on such issues. Using mathematics\, in particular statistics on large databases\, therefor can play an important part in this.\nIn this multiplier event of the Ensite project we will talk about how science and mathematics teacher educators can incorporate SSI. We focus on environmental SSI and use experiences and ideas from Ensite and other European projects on this subject (Parrise\, MasDiv).\nWe invite teacher educators of STEM-subjects and other interested parties to register. \nSchedule\n\n\n\n13:45-14:00\nIntroduction\n\n\n14:00-14:45\nInvited plenary – Christine Knippels (Utrecht University\, Freudenthal Institute) – SSI and IBL \nTo make responsible decisions regarding SSIs\, such as increased carbon dioxide emissions\, deployment of resources\, citizens need to consider both scientific knowledge and personal and social values and beliefs. Fostering these aspects of democratic citizenship is an important aim of science education (European Commission\, 2015). SSIBL aims to foster responsible research and innovation through science education\, by connecting SSIs with inquiry-based learning and citizenship education (Levinson et al.\, 2017). \nChristine will show how SSIBL was developed (for example in the Parrise project)\, will talk about the challenges of giving the right attention to SSIBL in teacher training\, and show some results of recent research: How do pre-service teachers value SSIBL-pedagogy?\n\n\n14:45-15:00\nBreak\n\n\n15:00-16:30\nTopic discussions\n\n\n\nParticipants will learn how to teach science and maths\, with the use of socioscientific issues. \nRegistration\nPlease register at here.
