Dear ICSE E-Mail,

It is time for the newest version of our ICSE Newsletter! This year 2019 has brought and keeps bringing exciting highlights for ICSE, its current international projects and project partners . Besides Educating the Educators III, the international conference on approaches to scaling up professional development in STEM education, many other multiplier events have taken or are taking place this year. Moreover, with this issue of the newsletter we start the series "ICSE Consortium Introduced", in which we present to you the member institutions of the consortium. We hope you enjoy the read!

IStanbul Welcomes You!

The International STEM Education Conference in conjunction with the International STEM Teacher Conference will be held in Istanbul on June 13-14, 2019. The conference aims to bring together teachers, researchers, practitioners and stakeholders from around the world to discuss issues related to STEM Education. The conference is organized in collaboration with the International Centre for STEM education (ICSE), the Turkish Ministry of Education, Istanbul Ayvansaray University, Turkish STEM Alliance and Hacettepe University as part of the STEM PD Net project.

Educating the Educators III

Preparations for the third international ETE conference on approaches to scaling up professional development in maths and science education are in full swing. The programme will be released on our website by the end of June and registrations are open and waiting for you! If you register until June 11, 2019, you can take advantage of the Early Bird prices. Regular registration stays open thereafter until September 21, 2019. Visit our website for more information on the registration process, the newest porgramme updates, general information, past conference books, etc. We are looking forward to welcoming you to Freiburg in October 2019!

Teacher Day in Europa Park

After the conference Educating the Educators III you are invited to a teacher day in Europa Park on October 9, 2019. Professor Ann-Marie Pendrill will share experiences of using amusement parks for STEM teaching and teacher professional development. Participants will have the opportunity to study STEM on some of the rides and discuss different formats for school visits to amusement parks and how universities and companies may be involved. The Europa Park generously provides a conference room for up to 60 participants and free entrance to the park. Participants only need to pay for lunch and snacks.

ICSE COnsortium Introduced: Utrecht University

Starting with this Newsletter, we will introduce two members from our ICSE Consortium in each issue.

The first consortium member is the prestigious Utrecht University, which is located at the centre of the Netherlands and whose scientist researchers have won a total of 12 Noble prizes.

The Freudenthal Institute at Utrecht University is currently collaborating with ICSE in two international projects and one PhD-trajectory.

ICSE Consortium Introduced: NTNU

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), situated in Trondheim, Gjøvik and Ålesund, is Norway’s largest university.

NTNU says the following about ICSE: "What we value most with our ICSE membership is the collaboration with numerous international partners within the STEM field, the possibilities for enlarging our network, including the connection between researchers, practitioners and policy makers, and the possibilities to develop and implement innovative projects in school and teacher education."

Masdiv Policy Seminar

On October 7, 2019, within the frame of the Educating the Educators conference, the MaSDiV project will host a policy seminar (by invitation only). The seminar will serve as an international forum to reflect and exchange experiences in cooperation between different stakeholders in the field of STEM education Professional Development on both, the national as well as the European level.

During the seminar, Mónika Kepe-Holmberg, EU - DG Education, Youth, Sport and Culture, will illuminate the importance of cooperation on the European level. Experts from policy, research and industry will present recent models and examples of best practices for cooperation in Europe. Policy makers, researchers and stakeholders in the field of Professional Development will have the opportunity to discuss and reflect various questions concerning the approach and implementation of successful cooperation: strategies and communication, benefits, risks and challenges.

InclusMe International Conference in Cyprus

From May 20-22, 2019, the Department of Education at the University of Nicosia, Cyprus, in collaboration with the Unesco Chair on Cultural Diversity and Intercultural Dialogue for a Culture of Peace, organized the international conference "Teaching Science and Mathematics in Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Settings."

The conference was the last multiplier event of IncluSMe and as such, it brought together researchers, practitioners and stakeholders from around the world to discuss issues pertaining to the role of language and culture in STEM.

Some of the discussed key issues in the upcoming report are the role of assessment, the use of community as resources to support schools and students, and the diversity of situations across Europe.

Inclusme and Stem pd National Multiplier events

In the first half of the year 2019 a number of exciting multiplier events took place all over Europe.

IncluSMe project partners from Greece, the Netherlands and Norway each organized national conferences, in order to disseminate the output of the project's working packages on intercultural learning in science and mathematics initial teacher education.

The STEM PD Net project team from Bulgaria organized a national conference on "effectiveness of activities and resources for professional development" in Sofia on March 14-15, 2019.

T3 Europe Conference: "Sharing Inspiration 2019- The Power of Realisation"

More than 110 math and science teachers from 20 countries gathered in Brussels for the conference “Sharing Inspiration” that took place from 28-31 March 2019. The T³ Europe teachers network biennially organizes this event to share best practices across Europe regarding curriculum aligned STE(A)M education. The various presentations, workshops and discussion groups involving Texas Instruments technology, inspired teachers. "The added value is that you learn from each other and that you make international contacts," according to participant Wesley Keldermans, mathematics teacher.

R'n'Python Programming in Aragon, Spain

Our new project partner, the Aragonese Center of Technologies for Education (CATEDU), understands programming as a key feature in the 21st century mindset, as it helps to collaborate in an open, reproducible and scalable way. Thus, CATEDU promotes this knowledge delivering courses about programming to spread the word. They want their students to interact with technology not just as consumers, but as creators
and critical thinkers!
