Developing Pathways for STE(A)M Education in Europe

In a significant move towards advancing STE(A)M education (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) in Europe, the SEER project, coordinated by European Schoolnet, has launched the SEER STE(A)M Education Roadmap. This roadmap is grounded in the findings of two comprehensive studies conducted over three years to understand the development of STE(A)M education across Europe.

Mapping over 800 EU projects

The first study conducted a large-scale mapping of over 800 EU-funded projects within the STE(A)M education landscape. Key trends were identified: digitalization and sustainability emerged as prominent themes, while inclusion remains underrepresented. These insights highlight the need to shape educational systems that are both future-focused and inclusive.

Interviewing Experts

The second study concentrated on national perspectives through interviews with policy experts from various European countries. Across all nations, STEM education is deemed a priority; however, large-scale implementation faces challenges, often hindered by bureaucratic obstacles and outdated administrative structures. Despite these challenges, EU-level initiatives play a crucial role in supporting national efforts.

The way ahead: the SEER Roadmap

These well-founded insights culminated in the SEER STE(A)M Education Roadmap, which provides clear recommendations for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders to systematically advance STE(A)M education across Europe. The Roadmap for 2025 advocates for systemic, inclusive, and future-oriented STE(A)M education and recommends:

  1. Integrating disciplines through inquiry-based, creative, and sustainability-linked learning supported by coherent policy and open-schooling partnerships.
  2. Empowering educators via continuous professional development, mentoring, and a European STE(A)M competence framework.
  3. Transforming teaching towards active, interdisciplinary, and evidence-based practices with reformed assessments.
  4. Linking education and industry through authentic career exposure and partnerships.

Additionally, the roadmap promotes technology integration, strong leadership, and inclusivity to build a coordinated European ecosystem bridging education, research, and industry.
