Project IncluSMe Multiplier Event
The multiplier event in the Netherlands was part of the annual conference Nationale Wiskunde Dagen (National Mathematics Days), which is very popular among teachers and teacher educators. The conference took place at Utrecht University on 1 February – 2 February 2019.
Several workshops were offered in the strand ‘multicultural mathematics’, which highlighted the multicultural aspect of mathematics and how to deal with cultural diversity in your own classroom. Three of these workshops offered were from the project IncluSMe, two of which were presented by project members of IncluSMe from Germany and Malta, making this an intercultural event for the Dutch participants. The workshops were based on ‘Culture-related contexts for mathematics and science’, ‘Assessment in mathematics and science in multicultural contexts’ and Different cultures – different approaches to reasoning and algorithms in mathematics’. (You can find interesting tasks from these and other modules on https://inclusme-project.eu/module/). In a lively atmosphere the participants engaged in activities and discussions on these topics, sharing ideas and experiences from their field. The practical value of the examples as well as the theoretical background on the meaning of ‘culture’ and ‘diversity’ was recognized and appreciated. It proved easy to connect this to the Dutch educational practice and the context-rich central final examinations in mathematics.
The project Intercultural learning in mathematics and science education (IncluSMe) has received co-funding by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.
