Integrating Nature-Based Solutions, school activism and citizen science into educational practice

NBS4Schools Workshop in Lisbon

On 17-18 February 2025, the NBS4S project – Empowering students to act for climate through Nature-Based Solutions, co-funded by the European Union – brought together 29 enthusiastic teachers from Portugal, Greece, Cyprus and Germany for an engaging two-day workshop in Lisbon. This event was an important milestone in our mission to integrate Nature-Based Solutions (NBS), school activism and citizen science into educational practice, and to foster a new generation of climate-conscious students.

The workshop provided educators with a solid grounding in the NBS4S project themes and highlighted the potential of NBS to address real-world challenges. One of the most exciting moments was when participants developed and shared their own project ideas, demonstrating how they could seamlessly integrate NBS into everyday school life. Teachers explored creative ways to apply nature-based-solutions in their own school environments, focusing on issues such as reducing heat in classrooms, minimising noise levels and improving green spaces for wellbeing.

An important part of the workshop was also dedicated to the presentation of our Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), which will soon be available in English and the languages involved in the project (Greek, Portuguese, German). This free online learning course will provide teachers and educators across Europe with valuable resources to support the integration of NBS, school activism and citizen science into their classrooms.

Following the workshop, on 19 February 2025, the NBS4S project partners gathered for a productive meeting to reflect on the outcomes of the event and strategise the next steps. Against the beautiful backdrop of Lisbon, the team strengthened their collaboration and set ambitious goals for the future of the project.
