Pet Journey: The Story of Environmental Transformation and Social Responsibility
by Onur Aydin
PET Journey is an innovative project that combines recycling and social responsibility. It enables students to identify environmental issues around them and develop solutions. Led by the ICSE Science Factory, the project focuses on addressing inefficiencies in the recycling process of PET bottles and encouraging creative solutions. Implemented in collaboration with the school, Bala Municipality, a bottled water company (JAVSU), and Ankara Technology Center, the initiative aims to spread environmental recycling awareness.
As part of the project, collected PET bottles are shredded into small pieces in a cutting unit and placed in a filament production machine. The resulting filaments are used in 3D printers to produce toys, serving as both a tangible example of recycling and a means of fostering social responsibility. Students actively participate in every stage of this process, learning to develop practical solutions to environmental problems.
One of the key stakeholders, the municipality, supported the project by collecting PET bottles in the town and organizing informational meetings with the public, ensuring that the project reached a wider audience. The municipality’s contributions allowed students’ efforts to impact beyond the school. Similarly, JAVSU increased the project’s visibility by printing “These bottles will be recycled into toys” on their products and donating defective bottles to the recycling process.
.
Throughout the project, PET bottles were processed in-school workshops, ensuring active participation from both students and the local community. This process instilled environmental awareness in students and provided opportunities to develop teamwork, problem-solving, and innovative thinking skills.

The project’s results were shared with the public during an event at the Ankara TEKMER Conference Hall. Approximately 200 five-litter PET bottles were recycled into toys for about 70 students in the pilot phase. Every stage of the project and its achievements were presented to the audience during the event. PET Journey has emerged as a model that fosters environmental awareness among students and the entire community.

Shaping STEM education across Europe
The ICSE Science Factory project marks a pivotal first step in shaping STEM education across Europe, focusing on health, sustainability, and digitalization. Engaging students with practical initiatives like Lighthouse Activities, Open Schooling Projects, and Career Talks, aims to inspire action for a sustainable future and promote STEM careers, especially among women. As this innovative approach continues across Croatia, Cyprus, Germany, Portugal, and Turkey, the project’s impact on education and global challenges looks promising. Together we pave the way to discovery and enable the next generation to innovate beyond the limits of today’s knowledge and find solutions for a future worth living.
