The PHABLABS 4.0 project shows a successful co-creation between the maker community and scientists for an improved understanding of Photonics. The concept of PHABLABS 4.0 is based on combining the world of Photonics with the growing creative ecosystem of existing Fab Labs. Joining forces of top experts from 13 European photonics institutes and STEM-oriented organizations with Fab Lab stakeholders, PHABLABS 4.0 have delivered 33 Photonics Workshops, 11 Photonics Challengers and Photonics Toolkits tailored for three different target groups. Special attention was given to create gender-sensitive instructions that gain the interest of girls and have a lasting impact on their personal relation to science, technology and Fab Labs. This project can serve as an inspiration for educators to co-create similar material in other science disciplines or to use the PHABLABS 4.0 material in their classrooms.
