Laboratory technology and products of everyday life

The first run of the two-day science camp of the GEM project (Empower Girls to Embrace their Digital and Entrepreneurial Potential) took place in the Czech Republic at the Department of Chemistry and Chemistry Education, Faculty of Education, Charles University at the end of the summer holidays, i.e., 30 – 31 August 2021. Twenty girls aged 12-16, who are interested in science and technology, completed a diverse program every day from 9:00 to 17:00.

The program consisted of:

  • lectures on Natural Sciences, Technology and Other Related Areas in Our Lives (prof. M. Bílek) and Chemistry and Art (doc. Š. Kučková),
  • workshops with the topics Computer in the Chemical Laboratory (dr. E. Stratilová-Urválková) and Natural Science Principles in Simple Experiments with Substances of Daily Consumption (prof. M. Bílek),
  • laboratory work with the topics How Substances around us are separated in a Chemical Laboratory (dr. K. Chroustová), We Measure with a Computer in a Chemical Laboratory (prof. M. Bílek) and Colours in a Chemical Laboratory (Ing. T. Smirnova).

The professional part of the program was supplemented by discussions with women-lecturers who are experiencing their working careers in the world of science and university education, about their lives and careers.

According to the responses of the participants and their parents, the girls enjoyed the program, they felt like scientists and some would like to repeat it soon.

Another run of the science camp with the same focus and approximately the same program is prepared by a team of organizers from the Department of Chemistry and Chemistry Education, Faculty of Education, Charles University for two days from the autumn holidays, i.e., on October 27-28, 2021 in the same place and to the same extent.
