IncluSMe Module 9 – Relevance of language in science education

This module focuses on the critical role of language in science education, providing trainee teachers with the knowledge and skills to support students effectively. Participants will develop an awareness of the relevance of language in science and understand the common language difficulties students face, along with strategies to overcome them. The module covers various types of scientific language and methods to aid student comprehension. Trainee teachers will learn pedagogical strategies to create inclusive lesson plans tailored to students from culturally diverse backgrounds.

About IncluSMe
This module is based on the work within the Erasmus+ project ‘Intercultural learning in mathematics and science initial teacher education’ (IncluSMe). Core to IncluSMe, which ran from  2016-2019, was the design and implementation of open access teaching modules. The project brought together 11 teams of higher education institutions for initial teacher education from across Europe and was lead and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Katja Maaß, International Centre for STEM education, University of Education Freiburg.

A total of 13 modules were developed to be used in higher education settings. Ready to use lecture presentations and accompanying notes for lecturers as well as worksheets for trainee teachers are part of every module.
