In recent years, several reports on critical features of high-quality professional development (PD) have emerged and supported the design of teacher PD programs. We are currently involved in a research project studying characteristics and impacts of two large-scale PD programs for mathematics teachers in Sweden. The programs are similar if characterized according to established research frameworks of what constitutes high-quality PD and have been conducted within the same national context and during the same time frame. Despite this, our results suggest that they differ in their impact on student achievement, both between the programs and between grade levels. In this presentation, we will present results from ongoing studies in our research group which may provide explanatory value for the differences found and have possible implications for the design of large-scale teacher PD programs. In particular, our results suggest specifications of two core critical features: Content focus and Coherence.
