IncluSMe Module 7 – Dealing with deficiencies and excellency in the mathematics proficiency of immigrant pupils


This module prepares prospective teachers to work with immigrant students of secondary school age and above, who have diverse backgrounds in mathematics. It addresses both students who may have gaps in their knowledge and those who exceed local or national curriculum standards. Trainee teachers will gain insights into how students’ previous experiences and cultural backgrounds can be used as educational resources. Additionally, the module focuses on effective assessment and challenging all students to maximize their potential.

About IncluSMe
This module is based on the work within the Erasmus+ project ‘Intercultural learning in mathematics and science initial teacher education’ (IncluSMe). Core to IncluSMe, which ran from  2016-2019, was the design and implementation of open access teaching modules. The project brought together 11 teams of higher education institutions for initial teacher education from across Europe and was lead and coordinated by Prof. Dr. Katja Maaß, International Centre for STEM education, University of Education Freiburg.

A total of 13 modules were developed to be used in higher education settings. Ready to use lecture presentations and accompanying notes for lecturers as well as worksheets for trainee teachers are part of every module.
